From so many viewpoints, the world can be divided into 2 groups of people.
Do you toss wads of paint into the trash after painting or… do you squeeze every last bit of use out of microscopic palette dots? People who toss a lot of paint away may or may not be worried about it, but they understand that it takes waste to make art. “Waste not, want not” just doesn’t apply in this case. Instead it should be, “Waste not, want lot”. Your painting will be the one wanting.
If you fall into the micro-dab group, I have a paradigm shift for you today. It makes sense to be sparing with your toothpaste, but not so much with your paint. Having enough paint to make your work it’s best, means that you will have to trash some of it after your session. It’s ok to be careful with your paint usage, but not to the point where you starve your work.
So, next time you buy a tube of paint, look at that tube for a second, relax and breathe. Then divide it visually into 4 parts. 3 of those parts should end up in creative bliss on some kind of surface, like your canvas. The other 4th will sacrifice itself for the good of your art. What a selfless thing for that paint to do! But don’t worry, it’s just paint.
Enjoy painting! The world needs happy artists.
